A Message from the Secretary

1997 Annual Meeting
The 1997 Annual Meeting of the Society was held at the University of California at Davis, on September 25-27, 1997, and by all accounts it was a smashing success. It could not have been otherwise given the tireless efforts of our gracious hosts, our past president and honorary president Fritz Juenger and his wife Barbara.

The symposium on Codification in the Twenty-First Century was informative nd thought provoking. The organizing committee, chaired by Professor Zekoll, did an excellent job in assembling an impressive group of speakers and panelists. Their papers will be printed in an upcoming issue of the U.C. Davis Law Review.

During the business meeting, George A. Bermann was re-elected vice president, James A.R. Nafziger was elected treasurer, and Roger J. Goebel and John C. Reitz were elected to the Executive Committee of the Society. The other non-officer members of the Committee are Herbert L. Bernstein, and Hillary K. Josephs.

Also, the following six schools were approved as new sponsor-members, thus raising to 92 the total number of sponsor members: Cleveland-Marshall College of Law; Indiana University at Indianapolis School of Law; University of Oregon School of Law; Pepperdine University School of Law; University of Pittsburgh School of Law; and Roger Williams University School of Law.

A full account of all the other decisions taken, or matters discussed, at the 1997 meeting will be contained in the minutes which will be sent later to all Directors and Editors.

1998 Annual Meeting
The 1998 Annual Meeting of the Society will be held in Bristol, during the XVth International Congress of Comparative Law. The Congress will take place from Sunday, July 26, to Saturday, August 1, 1998. Although the date of our meeting has not been fixed yet, we will try to schedule it in the middle of the week (perhaps on Wednesday, July 26) so as to ensure that colleagues who arrive late or leave early will be able to attend. The meeting will include elections for new president and secretary. The precise date and time of the meeting as well as other pertinent information will be sent to the Directors and Editors as soon as possible and will be published in the next issue of this Newsletter.
Bristol Congress
I have just received a brochure containing all the necessary information regarding the Bristol Congress. Excerpts from that brochure are located on the Upcoming Conferences page. The brochure also appears on the Internet at http://www.iel.bham.ac.uk/uknccl/. I have written to the organizers of the Congress asking them to send a brochure to all of our directors and editors. I do not know if my request will be met. If you are on the list of directors or editors and you do not receive a brochure by mid-January, or if you are not on the list and would like to receive a brochure, you may write to:
U.K. National Committee of Comparative Law
c/o Dean Michael Furmstom, Faculty of Law
University of Bristol
Wills Memorial Building, Queens Road
Bristol BS8 1RJ, England.
You may also email your request to uknccl-bristol@bristol.ac.uk

The brochure provides information on eight conference hotels. If you are interested in other hotels, or if you would like additional information about Bristol, including how to get there, train fares, etc., you may access the following address: http://www.bristol.digitalcity.org/org/council/about-tourism.html.

We hope that the American participation in the Bristol Congress will exceed that of the 1994 Congress in Athens, which was unprecedented both in numbers and quality.

Staying in Touch
Speaking of electronic communications, if you would like to communicate with me, regarding Bristol or other matters, the fastest way to do so is by email. My address is: lmsyme@unixl.sncc.lsu.edu.

With my best wishes for the New Year,

Symeon C. Symeonides
Secretary, ASCL
